tahoe snow

The Chronicle just published a special section on outdoor winter activities. The editors started planning this section months ago - I get sent to Lake Tahoe to find snow photos with a deadline of just 2 days! And as you can see by the photo of Tahoe (above), it was Mission Impossible. The expected snow storm never arrived. Snow only dusted the highest mountain peaks. Had we done it right, I would have gone three weeks ago when the area was covered in an early snowfall.

Fortunately the ski resorts in the area had snow, much of it man-made so that's where I went. I had to come back with something. Below are some of the photos I made. Not really happy with them but I did the best I could considering the conditions. Wish I had more time...and snow.

Working at the Chronicle can be very frustrating at times.

telemark

ski class sledding

Six year old Jordan Schabacker of American Canyon slides down an icy slope at Echo Summit Sno-Park near lake Tahoe.

Meanwhile, another six year old, Montana Miller of El Dorado Hills snowplows her way between cones as ski instructor Jill Dehner looks on. Part of a ski school called Snow Kids held at Squaw Valley Ski Resort for kids 4-12 years old.

snowshoeing

Cathy Anderson-Meyers of Grasss Valley goes snowshoeing on the slopes of Sugar Bowl Ski Resort near Donner Summit. Cathy leads snowshoeing tours in the Lake Tahoe area and took me out for a fun two hour walk.
