Back before the days of auto focus cameras, I used to take pride in my ability to follow focus fast action - a necessity in sports photography. I had good hand-eye coordination because I practiced it constantly. Now days, the auto focus function on our cameras is much faster and more accurate than my tired old eyes so I've relied on it heavily. Last night I paid the price. I was assigned to cover a local high school championship game. I arrived to discover my camera wouldn't auto-focus. Rather than panic, I turned it into a challenge and shot ALOT. Good thing I did. I was very rusty with my follow focus and had few publishable photos. But all I needed was one and was lucky enough to catch the above moment which I'm pleased with. For you photographers out there, this was shot at ASA 1,000 with a shutter/aperture of 1/400 sec at f1.8. Not much light in this particular gym! |
