Giving thanks

Aubrey Elliott of SF has a big smile and a firm handshake of thanks for Reverend Cecil Williams (right) as he waits in line for his bag of groceries.

Glide Memorial Church in SF and 600 volunteers gave away 6,000 holiday grocery bags to the needy, one week before Christmas. Each bag has a turkey and all the makings for a holiday meal. Glide Memorial has been giving out holiday grocery bags since 1985, about 160,000 in all. Reverend Cecil Williams is the driving force behind it all and relies on the generosity of the volunteers and all the corporations who donate the food.

A fun, feel-good story to cover...smiles all around.

Volunteers prepare each bag with a turkey, bread, canned goods and fresh fruit and vegetables. Above, Fayçal Nezzaghy had fun sliding grocery bags to another volunteer for distribution to the needy.

Natasha Rosenblatt helps an elderly woman with her bag of groceries. Rosenblatt is a 13 year old student at Berkeley's Head Royce School and was volunteering along with other classmates as a school project in volunteerism.
